Tom Holman has a long and distinguished career in audio, video and film. Both creators and viewers of motion pictures have felt his tremendous influence. Over the period 1980–95, Tom designed the THX Sound System for theatres, which was the first and most successful attempt at delivering “what the director intended” to cinema patrons around the world. During part of this period Tom Holman was Corporate Technical Director for Lucasfilm Ltd. By 2000, there were over 3,000 professional installations of the system throughout the USA, Canada, the Far East and Europe. Tom set the technical standards for the Theatre Alignment Program (TAP), promoting better presentation in theatres. The National Association of Theatre Owners adopted these TAP standards as their recommended practice for presentation quality.

During his 15 years at Lucasfilm, he spearheaded the conception, design, development and implementation of the technical infrastructure for George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. This included the famous Skywalker Sound Post-Production facility.

Tom creates new markets and redefines existing markets by establishing new quality standards and designing products that perform to them. In recent years he has developed the 10.2 surround sound specification, which provides substantial performance improvements over the more widely used 5.1 surround sound systems found in home cinema.

Tom is currently a Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinema-Television and President of TMH Corporation. He holds several patents and has won numerous awards including an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 2002.
